“You want a Confederate Monument? “My body is a Confederate Monument,” wrote African-American academic Caroline Randall Williams in the NYTimes. Poet, essayist and author of Soul Food Love, which received the NAACP Image Award in Literature, Professor Williams is Vanderbilt University’s Writer-In-Residence. She also uses the lens of Shakespeare’s “Dark Lady” sonnets to explain how the black female body has been viewed from Elizabethan England to the Jim Crow South to today.
